Comprehension and Written Expression is a foundational course tailored for first-year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. It aims to enhance written communication proficiency by focusing on sentence and paragraph construction. Students will develop proficiency in recognizing and employing various sentence patterns, culminating in the creation of well-structured paragraphs featuring a discernible topic sentence, comprehensive idea development, and a strong conclusion.

The course entails a range of writing assignments to cultivate essential skills. Additionally, it emphasizes the writing process, emphasizing purpose, audience, organizational strategies, evidence-based development, and linguistic precision, including grammar and sentence structure. In essence, this course is strategically designed to impart a comprehensive understanding of the writing process, equipping students with the confidence and skills requisite for success at the university level.


Written expression course for first-year is divided into two semesters. In semester one, the students will be taught the basics of the English sentence: its types and the problems related to it. At the end of the semester, they will be able to write correct varied senteneces.

The second semester deals with the paragraph. At the end of the year, students will master both the English sentence and the paragraph. They will be able to distinguish between the different types of paragraphs. Besides, they will write a variety of paragrapghs according to purpose. Finally, they will be introduced to the paragraph in the essay.
