Having accurate pronunciation is necessary in order to transmit the intended message with clarity and avoid confusion. The present handout is an attempt to compile a number of lectures and practical exercises in a structured and organized way to provide English as a foreign language (EFL) students with basic knowledge of English Phonetics and Phonology to improve their pronunciation. This set of basic materials is prepared specifically for first year graduate students of English at Mostefa Benboulaid Batna-2 University. The present course aims at developing first year students’ awareness of how English phonetics and phonology is structured and studied. As well as, it targets to help students to articulate, describe, transcribe and pronounce English speech sounds correctly.
General Aims of the Course:
After finishing this course, students are expected to be able to:
1. Recognize and describe the specific key terms found in phonetics and phonology.
2. Gain a general overview about phonetics and phonology and know their role of in language learning.
3. Give a description of the acoustic, articulatory and perceptual nature of speech sounds.
4. Be familiar with the organs of speech and describe their mechanism to produce speech sounds.
5. Understand how human sounds are articulated and produced
6. Understand the process of sound production of vowels and consonants.
7. Thoroughly describe and classify English speech sounds.
8. Have a greater awareness of IPA symbols and using them to transcribe English words
9. Know and understand the different kinds of transcription
10. Recognize the importance of stress and weak forms.
11. Prepare themselves for more advanced level course in phonetics and Phonology.
12. Be aware of the strong interconnection between lectures.
