American Civilization and Culture
American Civilization and Culture is a course specifically intended for Master II LMD students in the field of Language and Culture at the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Batna 2 in Algeria. The course accounts for students’ prior learning about the formative eras of the United States, including colonial beginnings, revolutionary conflicts, the Civil War, Reconstruction, emancipation, the Civil Rights Movement, and major conflicts and social transformation in the twentieth century, thus enhancing their understanding of the structural and cultural forces that continuously transform American society. Within more than fourteen weeks, the students will study the constitutional roots of American democracy, read the global dimensions and strategic interests of American foreign policy, and examine the interactive relationship of media, visual arts, and literature in creating and challenging national identity. By combining theoretical lectures, critical debate, and classroom and online activities, the course aims to foster higher-order analysis skills and knowledge of U.S. political and cultural realities.
