ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES M2 LAL

ESP 2 COURSE FOR M2 LANGUAGE AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS STUDENTS (LAL), offered as part of the Transversal Teaching Unit for Master 2 students in Language and Applied Linguistics (LAL), is a module designed to enhance learners’ theoretical and practical understanding of English for Specific Purposes. It carries a value of 01 credit, with a coefficient of 01, and is delivered in an entirely online format. It requires a weekly commitment of 1 hour and 30 minutes of guided instruction and independent study. Evaluation for the course is wholly based on a final exam (100%), encouraging continuous engagement with the content and a deep internalization of key concepts. Positioned at an advanced academic level, this course aims to prepare future language professionals, teachers, researchers, curriculum designers, and language consultants to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of ESP teaching and learning. Building on prior knowledge of linguistics, pedagogy, and English language proficiency, the course provides a comprehensive exploration of the theoretical foundations, pedagogical practices, and real-world applications of ESP in various domains such as business, law, medicine, science, and technology. It emphasizes the importance of needs analysis as the starting point for course design, guiding students to develop skills in planning and evaluating ESP programs and materials tailored to specific learner groups. A major focus is also placed on the contextual teaching of language skills—including listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and translation—within authentic professional and academic settings. Additionally, the course promotes the effective use of digital tools and platforms, which have become essential components of modern ESP instruction, particularly in online and blended learning environments. As the field of ESP continues to evolve, the course engages students with current and emerging trends, including the growing implementation of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in global education systems. Throughout the semester, students are encouraged to adopt a reflective and analytical approach, examining how ESP differs from General English and how it can be used to meet specific communicative goals. By the end of the module, learners are expected to demonstrate the ability to design context-specific ESP syllabi, integrate appropriate materials and teaching strategies, apply ICT effectively in their instruction, and engage critically with future directions in the field. In essence, this course positions ESP not simply as a language teaching methodology but as a dynamic, adaptive framework that prepares learners for effective communication and professional success in specialized contexts.
